Thalaimalai from Kadaperi, staff of a private firm, had bought a smartphone for Rs 14,000 two months ago from a popular shop in Chromepet. He used his savings to buy the phone, which was supposed to be a gift for his son after the Class 12 board examination. After the results were declared, he tried to switch on the phone but it did not turn on.
He went to the store, where the staff told him to take it to the service centre. There, he was told that the fault was with the motherboard. He was asked to shell out Rs 15,000 if he wanted to get it repaired, as the fault was not covered under the warranty.
On Friday evening Thalaimalai, went to the shop in Chromepet asking for a replacement. When the store refused to agree to it, it led to an argument. Following this, he set the smartphone afire right in front of the shop as protest.
