The house with thatched roof was completely gutted in the incident. The house owner Senthil had rented the premises and two families were living there. The police said that Ravi and his wife, daily wage labourers, have been staying in the house for three years. On Wednesday, Ravi borrowed a cylinder from his neighbour and replaced the empty cylinder in his house with it around 8 pm. When he lit the stove, a fire broke out suddenly. However, the inmates managed to get out of the house before the explosion took place.

Later, a fire tender from Triplicane rushed to the spot and doused the fire. Police suspect that Ravi may have failed to close the cylinder valve properly which might have led to fire and explosion.
