Debt-ridden woman murders two kids, attempts suicide

Police said that Shailaja (29) of Thomas Street, Ganapathy Nagar in Alapakkam near Maduravoyal was found lying unconscious along with her two children Srilakshmi (4) and Adhidesh (2) on Wednesday morning. Her husband Sibiraj’s friend Jinath, who arrived from Kerala, found them lying in the bedroom of their apartment.

He rushed them to a nearby hospital where doctors declared the two children dead, while the woman who was struggling for her life was admitted at the hospital for treatment. The bodies of the children were sent to Government Hospital at Kilpauk for post-mortem examination.

Police said that she remained unconscious and the clear picture of why she murdered her children would emerge only after she wakes up. However, preliminary investigations revealed that she was under pressure over mounting debt after her husband Sibiraj’s death three months ago. Sibiraj, who was running a finance company in Koyambedu, died due to an illness in February, said police.

Investigation also revealed that the Shailaja was Sibiraj’s second wife. Recently, she called up Sibiraj’s first wife narrating her ordeal when she was reportedly asked to come to Kerala, police said.

Police have registered a case and are conducting an inquiry with Sibiraj’s friend Jinath.
