The Maraimalai Nagar Municipality consists of 21 wards with nearly 80,000 people. The residents of this industrial suburb complain that the municipality is considering only the seven wards in the Maraimalai Nagar town while they are not attending to the issues in other wards which are located in the interior areas. They said that there was no proper drainage system in the locality and as a result the sewage was stagnating on the road.
They said that even the water supply was provided regularly only to Maraimalai Nagar town residents while other areas were put to suffer every day without proper water supply. The residents claimed to have approached the local body officials many times and requested them to construct drainage and provide proper water supply, but till now no action has been taken.
The locals said that since the drainage water is flowing on the roads, it gives a bad atmosphere and thereby the kids could not play outside on the streets as it is filled with drainage. “I don’t know why the municipality is not constructing the drainage which is very essential,” said Kanakaraj, a resident of Maramalai Nagar.
When contacted, the Maraimalai Nagar Municipal Engineer M Raghupathi, said that the problem has been reported for many years and only now the government has provided permission to construct underground drainage (UGD) in all the 21 wards. “The surveying works have been started and hopefully, it will be constructed soon,” the official said. He added that the water would be supplied throughlorries to all the wardsregularly.
