With a constant worry of how our dogs or cats are doing at home without us, many of us don’t enjoy our vacations to the fullest. Instead, with a bit of planning ahead, you can take your pet along with you on a vacation and together seek respite from the heat.
Planning the travel
It goes without saying that picking the location must be the first step to your travel plan. If this is the first time that you are going to be travelling with your pet, it is better to keep the destination’s temperatures in mind. It is wiser to avoid places with extreme hot, or extreme cold temperatures, especially if your pet will be travelling long distances for the first time. If your destination is a few hours of car ride away, then you can make your pet comfortable in your own vehicle. But if journey is tough to be covered by car, then you can opt to take a train, in which you’ll have to book the first class coupe to be able to travel with your dog or cat. Alternatively, if you want to fly to your destination, a few airlines allow pets to be carried in crates as part of the cabin baggage (if they weigh less than 5 kg) and heavier dogs to be transported in cargo. International travel will require a few additional clearances from the authorities.
Accessories to take your stress away
Some of the clever accessories available in the market can help make our lives easier while travelling with dogs and cats. A collapsible water bowl, a car seat cover for dogs to be able to comfortably lounge while you drive away, a makeshift litter box out of cardboard and a blanket from home for your little kitten to feel at ease — simple solutions like these can make travelling less stressful for you. Don’t forget to pack a little extra of treats and dry food for your pets.
Pet-friendly stays
Many hotels, smaller inns often display on their websites if they are happy to welcome our four-legged friends. If hotels get expensive, booking home stays can be an affordable way of providing a comfortable stay to your pet as a home away from home. Plan out some activities that you can partake in along with your pet — be it hiking, swimming or camping.
