The accused were identified as Beena (53), Jothy (48), Deepanjali (21), Sunitha (26), Ringhu Singh (35) and Ramkumar (40). The police said that all the accused, residents of Mangalpuri in New Delhi, were relatives.
“The gang first went to Tirupati and then reached Chennai. They stayed at a hotel on Walltax Road and have been roaming the city in their car for the past five days,” said the police.
The gang visited all popular malls and textile shops in Purasaiwalkam and Adyar and stole dresses worth lakhs. On Monday, they reached T Nagar and stole three sarees worth Rs 1.27 lakh, Rs 55,000 and Rs 48,000 from a popular shop in Mambalam police station limits. Later, they went to another multi-storied complex opposite to Panagal Park and tried to steal dresses. However, alert staff members surrounded them and questioned them.
Later, their car was checked in which stolen clothes worth several lakhs were found inside. On information, the Pondy Bazaar police secured them and seized the sarees and the car from them. They were remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.
Though the gang claimed that it was their first time in the city, the police suspect otherwise as they were aware of all popular commercial zones in Chennai. The police have planned to take them into custody again to verify their background.
