“The woman’s family was against their marriage and her parents had found a groom for her and fixed the marriage. The man, Surendar, confronted her on the matter, but she apparently told him that she was ready to marry the man her parents had chosen. Allegedly angered by this, Surendar attacked her on Friday,” a police officer said.

It is not yet clear if the accused jumped in front of the train to commit suicide after attacking her, or if he was accidently hit by the train when he attempted to escape from the crime scene, the police said, adding that inquiries were on to ascertain this.

“He is not in a position to talk,” the police said.

The attack left the woman with injuries on her neck and face, said the police.
