The 35-acre land in Kalanji revenue village near Minjur is a drainage basin for surplus water from Arani river through Seyol river base. Adjacent to the river base, there is a 152-acre land that belongs to Tidco. It had been occupied by encroachers, who had set up prawn farms by increasing the height of the bund by 10 feet.
After residents of the village petitioned the Tiruvallur Collector and Ponneri revenue officials about the encroachment, Revenue inspector Devan and village administrative officer Sampath surveyed the land and submitted a report, confirming the illegal occupation of the government land with proper electricity connections.
Ponneri Revenue Divisional Officer Nandakumar, Tahsildar Pugazhendhi and other officials visited the village on Saturday and razed the prawn farms with the help of an earthmover and retrieved about 35 acres of the land. Power supply to the farms were also stopped by the Tangedco officials and police personnel had been deployed to prevent any untoward development. Tension prevailed in the village due to the government officials’ action.
The Tahsildar submitted a report about the land retrieval to Tiruvallur Collector on Saturday.
