Huts gutted in LPG cylinder fire: cash, jewels destroyed

Three huts caught fire after an LPG cylinder leak triggered fire near Uthiramerur in the wee hours of Wednesday.

According to the police, the incident happened around 3am and it is believed that the fire started from the house of Mani (45), a construction worker. No one was hurt as three residents were sleeping outside during to the hot weather.


Though the villagers tried to control the fire, it spread to two other nearby huts. A fire and rescue team from Uthiramerur rushed to the spot and doused the fire.


The police said 7 sovereigns of ornaments and cash worth Rs 80,000 in Mani’s house were destroyed in the fire. Besides, Rs 30,000 inside Sachiamma’s house was also charred in the fire. The Magaral police have registered a case and further inquiries are on.
