Do you remember the last time you smeared paint on a canvas without any inhibitions? Maybe, you would have done it during your childhood days. If you wanted to experience it again and reconnect with your creativity, then head to one of the paint parties hosted by IlluminArty. It’s an initiative that focusses on the concept of merging art and design. The brainchild of Indrajala Moturi and Mridul Sahuwala, two creative souls from Chennai, IlluminArty organises creative workshops across the city catering to different categories, like paint parties, children’s workshops and other customised events.
“Most of us used to paint during our free time while growing up. But after a point, we quit the habit, citing various reasons. Indrajala and I wanted to give a creative experience to the people in the city and thus we started IlluminArty,” says Mridul, one of the co-founders.
There are two verticals for IlluminArty — one is called @work and the other is @play. “IlluminArty@work is designed for corporates where we inculcate and encourage the habit of creative thinking on a daily basis in their work area. We have workshops that target team building, problem-solving, etc. Whereas, IlluminArty@play focuses on different kinds of paint parties. The emphasis of the paint party is to get people from different walks of life come together, post work, and meet new people and do something creative,” she adds.
Through IlluminArty, the duo is spreading the idea of ‘social artworking’. “There aren’t many spaces in the city, where people can come together and build meaningful relationships in an artistic backdrop. It’s not an art workshop where we teach any art techniques. The whole idea is to let loose and enjoy the creative freedom. Indrajala and I take the members through a step-by-step guided painting session, where they come up with an art piece. We also provide food, beverages, and art materials,” explains Mridul. The duo conducts paint parties twice a month at different venues in the city.
