Foreign currency worth Rs 99.5L seized from Lankan passenger at city airport

Customs officials have seized foreign currencies to the tune of Rs 99.5 lakh from a Dubai-bound Sri Lankan passenger, who arrived from Colombo at the Chennai international airport on Tuesday.

A release from the office of the Commissioner of customs here said that based on specific information that a Sri Lankan transit passenger who had arrived from Colombo and was bound for Dubai by Indigo flight was intercepted at the departure lounge before security check by Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) officers on suspicion of carrying foreign currency.


As he gave evasive replies during interrogation, the officials searched his hand baggage and found a plastic cover containing assorted foreign currencies including Euros, Kuwaiti Dinars, and UAE Dirhams in various denominations, valued at Rs 99.5 lakh. He said the currencies were handed over to him by some unknown person near the aerobridge area. The foreign currencies were recovered and seized under the provisions of Customs Act, 1962. The passenger was arrested and later given bail. Further investigation is under way.
