The old building, which is almost 108 years old, has a few departments including the surgical gastroenterology department, medical store and surgical store of the hospital.
The forensic block including the lecture hall, storage room for all the records, and a staff room was proposed to be built in the old block. The mortuary and the new block of the hospital was remodelled. However, the old block is retained without any changes in the building.
“The building was announced as a heritage building and we will be shifting the departments being operated in the old building to the new block soon. The building is usable currently and has been declared to be of heritage importance because of the architecture of the building,” said Dr P Mani, medical superintendent, Royapettah Government Hospital.
“The government have not allocated any funds for the renovation of the building so far. The roof of the building is leaking and is in need of immediate attention,” added Mani.
