The couple, Prakash Menon (55) and Bindhu (48), lived on the second floor an apartment complex comprising nearly 40 houses at Shakti Nagar on Guindy-Porur Trunk Road.
Around 12.30 am, a spark in the indoor air-conditioner unit in the hall resulted in a compressor blast, police said. The couple sustained injuries and could not escape as the smoke filled the hall. As neighbours were struggling to enter the house, police personnel on night patrol who noticed the panic situation in the apartment rushed there and rescued the couple and their two sons who were sleeping in another room.
On information, fire tenders from Virugambakkam fire station rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. The couple were rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Bindhu is said to have sustained 40 per cent burns while Prakash Menon suffered 18 per cent burns. Their two children escaped without injuries as the fire was put off before it spread further. Forensic experts visited the spot and collected the samples to ascertain the cause of the accident. SRMC police have registered a case and further inquiry is on.
