Govt school teacher's suicide prevented

A 40-year-old government school teacher, who was about to attempt suicide by jumping from the school building on Monday, was saved by other staff at the school. The attempt was a result of the head of the Parents Teachers Association allegedly threatening to murder him when he asked him to repay Rs 5 lakh which he had borrowed last year.

The man, Kirubakaran from Saidapet, is working as a zoology teacher at the Anakaputhur Government Higher Secondary School for the past five years. Last year, Kirubakaran had availed a housing loan of Rs 10 lakh from a bank with the help of Muralidaran, the PTA head and also an AIADMK functionary.

As soon as Kirubakaran got the loan amount, Muralidaran borrowed Rs 5.35 lakh, promising to return the money in 10 days. Police said Muralidaran did not return the money for a year. Recently Kirubakaran was transferred to Nanganallur government school. Two days ago, Kirubakaran went to Muralidaran’s house and asked him to return the money before he was relieved from Anagaputhur. But Muralidaran allegedly assaulted him and warned him against coming to his house. He also sent a message through WhatsApp threatening to murder Kirubakaran if he asked for the money again.

On Monday, he had told the other staff in the school that he was planning to commit suicide. Later, they noticed him climbing to the second floor of the building. The other staff who saw that rushed to the top floor and stopped him. Kirubarakan suddenly swooned, reportedly due to blood pressure fluctuation, and was taken to the Chromepet government hospital.

Based on the alert from the hospital, a police team arrived at the spot and conducted inquiries.

Meanwhile, the school students protested inside the campus for nearly an hour, demanding action against Muralidaran. The Shankar Nagar police are conducting an inquiry but are yet to register an FIR.
