The deceased were identified as Pradeep (30) from Arputham Nagar in West Tambaram who owns an ironing shop and his friend Suresh (32) from Adhi Nagar in Selaiyur. Police said both were history-sheeters with many petty cases against them. Suresh had been in prison under the Goondas Act and was released from jail only recently.
On Monday morning, Suresh went to Arputham Nagar on his two-wheeler and picked up Pradeep from his house. As they were travelling on the Tiruneermalai Main Road, three men on two bikes came from the opposite side and hit their bike. In the impact, both Pradeep and Suresh fell down. Before they could get up, the group slashed their throats using sickles killing them on the spot and escaped on their two-wheelers.
The Tambaram police arrived at the spot and sent the bodies for post-mortem examination to Chromepet Government Hospital. Police said the deceased persons had an ongoing fight with a rival gang over extorting money from the neighbourhood, which they believe could have led to the murder. Investigating officers added that Suresh and Pradeep had knives with them but were killed before they could take it out. The Tambaram police have registered a case and are searching for the three men using CCTV footages.
