DoTE is conducting counselling for engineering admissions this year after Anna University refused to do the admission process due to various issues with the Higher Education Department.
After receiving the applications, the DoTE released the merit list in June and counselling was conducted from July 3, based on the ranks secured by the students.
Accordingly, about 1.07 lakh students were called for counselling, which was conducted in multiple rounds. The seat allotments for the students, who participated in the first and second round, were released on July 18.
Though the counselling for the students who participated in the third round is over, applicants have another three days until Tuesday to list their choice of courses and colleges. Allotment of these students will be made on July 21. Allocation of the students who attended the final and fourth round of counselling will be announced on July 26.
A senior official from the DoTE told DT Next on Saturday that of the 1.07 lakh students, who were called for counselling, about 70 per cent of candidates participated in the admission process.
“Among the students who participated in the counselling about 50 per cent opted for BE Computer Science while about 20 per cent of the students preferred Electronics and Electrical Engineering Courses, the official said. The official also pointed out that more than one lakh seats would be vacant this year, too.
DoTE official said that engineering colleges will open in the first week of August. “Initial payment made by the students during the counselling will be adjusted in the college tuition fees during the admission,” he said while noting that “About 80 per cent of the initial payment will be refunded to the candidates who fail to join college.”
