Magazine editor held for spreading rumours about minister’s son

He was arrested for allegedly spreading rumours about Minister CVe Shamugham’s son.

The rumour was linked to an accident that happened on East Coast Road on June 26, in which a sedan, with a drunk youth behind the wheel, rammed an autorickshaw and some push carts. Public and police patrol team nabbed three people from the car and found that all three, including the driver, identified as Naveen, were drunk.

Following the incident, a video of Naveen attacking and abusing police personnel went viral on social media.

Police said Chellapandi uploaded the video on his YouTube page and alleged that the drunk man attacking the cops was the son of CVe Shanmugham, Minister of Law, Court and Prisons.

Police noted that the video of him stating that the son of a Minister involved in creating ruckus went viral. However, the Minister clarified that it was not his son and filed a complaint with the Chennai police Commissioner claiming that name of his family has been defamed and sought the arrest of the person behind the video.

Based on the complaint, Chellapandi was arrested on Wednesday and remanded to judicial custody. He was booked under four sections, including IPC Section 469 (Forgery for purpose of harming) and Section 503 (Criminal intimidation).
