The deceased, Ashok Kumar, a resident of Valluvar Street, was living alone as his parents died when he was young. He used to ride an autorickshaw for a living and recently started working as a construction labourer.

The police said that three unidentified men knocked on his door around 11 pm on Friday. When Ashok Kumar stepped out, the gang started attacking him with wooden logs. Even as he collapsed on the floor after receiving a blow on his head, the gang kept hitting him until the neighbours reached the spot, hearing the victim’s cries.

While the gang fled the spot, neighbours rushed him to a nearby hospital in an ambulance. But doctors declared him dead on arrival. His body was sent to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

The Avadi Tank Factory police, who have registered a case on the murder, are going through the CCTV footage collected from the locality to identify the gang.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Ashok Kumar could have been murdered as he was in a relationship with a married woman in the locality. “He continued his relationship despite the woman’s husband warning him against it. Though the couple moved to their hometown in Tirunelveli, Ashok Kumar had been in touch with the woman over phone. He last spoke to the woman 20 minutes before he was murdered,” said the police. They suspect that the woman’s husband could have sent the men to murder him.

Further investigation is on to ascertain if there is any other reason for the murder.
