The deceased, identified as Parvathy, lived with her husband Chandrasekar, an auto driver at Pondy Bazaar. She worked in a hotel in Thanikachalam Road. The couple has two children - Kavitha and Kamalraj, said police.

In July last year, a case was reported that around Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and gold jewels worth Rs 1 lakh had been stolen from Chidambaram’s house. Two women – Vijaya and Vennila – who were working as housemaids were arrested in this connection.

However, the women’s relatives lodged a complaint at Pondy Bazaar police station recently claiming that some of the stolen jewels were given to Parvathy to keep them safe, but the latter refused to return them.

The Pondy Bazaar police visited Parvathy’s house and inquired her and her daughter Kavitha. It is said that Parvathy was dejected over the developments that they are unnecessarily being pulled into the case and hanged self in the house on Sunday night. A case has been registered on Parvathy’s suicide and further investigation is on, said the police officers.
