Pallavan Transport Consultancy Services Ltd, a state government undertaking, has organised a series of public consultations on its plan to introduce the system in six high-volume corridors – Koyambedu-Poonamallee, Koyambedu-Madhavaram, Koyambedu-Ambattur, Koyambedu-Saidapet, Saidapet-Siruseri, Saidapet-Mahindra City and Chromepet-Thoraipakkam – extending up to 113 kilometres.
During the first meeting with stakeholders on Saturday, commuters and residents were asked to express their views and suggestions on Koyambedu – Poonamallee corridor. The feasible ones from the suggestions they put forth would be incorporated with the detailed project report (DPR) which is being prepared by IMAX, a private consultant.
While most participants welcomed the move, Traffic and Transportation Forum Chennai stressed the importance of keeping the affordability factor in mind while fixing bus fares, as it should be feasible for the middle class and poorer sections of the society.
“The government’s intent should not only be reducing congestion on the roads but also to include poor people by fixing nominal bus fares,” V Subramani, director of the Forum, said in the meeting.
The Forum also urged the officials of Pallavan Transport Consultancy Services to add Tambaram-Velachery-Taramani-Tiruvanmiyur corridor under the BRT project.
