Kanchi Collector pulls up cop for allowing ‘VIPs sans pass’

Angry that an inspector posted at the VIP gate let in persons who did not have the pass, Kancheepuram district Collector P Ponniah severely reprimanded the official and suspended him for a day, which has now led to resentment within the personnel deployed at Devarajaswami temple in connection with Athi Varadhar festival.

On Friday night, Collector conducted a surprise inspection and found that inspector Ramesh from Tiruvallur allowed people without pass. He castigated the inspector in front of the people and other officials. The Collector and his team also found that many who were standing in queue did not have VIP pass.

A section of police personnel is unhappy with the manner in which Collector Ponnaiah handled the issue. Tamil Nadu Police Constabulary Association are mulling to take up the matter with the authorities concerned, seeking action against him. A member of the association even alleged that the Collector was angry at the inspector for not allowing someone known to him without a valid VIP pass.

Meanwhile, the team continued inspections on Saturday morning and found that a group of nine women from Kancheepuram tried to enter the VIP area using duplicate passes. When questioned, the women claimed not being aware that they were fake, adding that an agent issued them those passes. They were let off with a warning, but probe is on to trace the persons supplying duplicate passes.

8 Devotees Swoon

Eight persons, including three men, who were waiting in a queue at the VIP area, fell unconscious on Saturday morning. Soon, all of them were rushed to the medical desk and were given treatments. An official said that the eight were suffocated and swooned as the crowd in the VIP area was more than usual.
