Inquiries by higher officials revealed that the incident happened on Arcot Road at Virugambakkam. The men have been identified as 26-year-old Varunraj from Kerala and his friend Ajith Kumar from Ulundurpet. The men work in a software firm in Porur and have been staying in Valasaravakkam, the police said.
Early on Monday, Royala Nagar inspector Thomson Xavier, who was on night rounds, saw a group of men surrounding a man selling tea on a bi-cycle on Arcot Road and drove the vehicle near them. On noticing the police vehicle, the tea seller asked the youngsters to vacate the spot. While others fled, Varunraj and Ajith started their two-wheeler but ran it into the inspector’s vehicle parked ahead of them.
After the inspector confirmed that they were drunk, he called on a patrol vehicle to arrive at the spot to take the men to the police station. Accordingly, a sub-inspector and a driver arrived with a patrol vehicle and made Varunraj and Ajith board it.
While the inspector was explaining the incident to the sub-inspector, Varunraj, who was seated in the second row, reached for the in-car walkie-talkie and started crying out that they have been falsely secured for drunken driving. The other police personnel immediately snatched the mic from him and took the men to the police station. They were booked for nuisance and released on bail. The Virugambakkam traffic police were also instructed to book Varunraj for drunk driving.
