On Tuesday morning, Purushothaman (40) and his gang barged into the house of Sanjivirayan (62) in Kavan Street and attacked his family members. Sanjivirayan’s brother Dhanachezhiyan (50) was murdered in the incident. The group had planned to murder Sanjivirayan, but he was not in town on Tuesday.

Last year, a tussle broke out between Sanjivirayan and Purushothaman who has petty cases against him, over organising a function at the Mariamman Temple in their neighbourhood. With the support of the local public, Sanjivirayan organised the function. Police said Sanjivirayan had warned Purushothaman that he would inform the police about the latter’s ganja trade.

Six months ago, the police had arrested Purushothaman for peddling ganja. Holding Sanjivirayan to be the reason for his arrest, Purushothaman decided to kill him while in prison, police said. After Purushothaman was released on bail, he has been threatening Sanjivirayan following which the latter filed a police complaint.

Unaware that Sanjivirayan was not at home, the gang barged into the house on Tuesday and attacked his family members and a pedestrian, identified as Devaki (60), and escaped from the spot.

Following the incident, the police formed a special team to nabbed the main accused Purushothaman and his gang involved in the attack. On Wednesday, the police arrested nine of them near Arakkonam and further inquiry is on.
