Garbage finds way into drains in Tiruvottiyur
Garbage piling up after each passing day, which often finds its way into the drainage during rains, is causing severe hardship for the people living along Selva Vinayaga Street in Thangal at Tiruvottiyur. The residents alleged that the authorities have not taken any action even after raising the matter several times.

“The bins are still placed upside down. Though Corporation personnel clear the waste every day, more garbage is accumulating,” said Thyagarajan V, a resident. He added that there was water stagnation near the bins during rains, which has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Dueto this, communicable diseases like flu and dengue were spreading during the rainy season, he said.
The drain running along the road is left uncovered, due to which the garbage flows into the drains and clogs it after every rain, Thyagarajan said. “This results in water stagnating on the street. Immediate action should be taken to avoid this in the coming days,” Thyagarajan said.
The people also complained that stray dogs and cattle are rummaging through the plastic bags and covers, scattering the waste all around the neighbourhood. A few residents also complained that though this posed a threat to their health, their grievances were ignored by the officials concerned.
Speaking to DT Next, Paramasivan, conservancy supervisor, Tiruvottiyur zonal office said, “We haven’t received any complaint from that locality. The sanitary workers are instructed to clean twice every day. We will visit the area and solve the issue soon.”
