As a part of the event, Chennai Corporation Commissioner G Prakash inaugurated an awareness campaign, ‘race to zero-waste’ marathon, that commenced from Tower Park in Anna Nagar, in which several residents and civic officials took part.

“The Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group (CAG) has initiated the campaign and the event has been conducted for the sixth time in Anna Nagar. As we are working towards making Chennai a zero-waste city, this type of events help sensitise the residents,” a Chennai Corporation official said.

In order to sensitise the participants, the organisers conducted an exhibition at the venue in which alternative products of one-time plastic items were showcased. Several organisations, including Arunodaya, Namma Boomi and Sustainable Clumps, showcased their plastic alternatives. Workshops were conducted to teach the residents on composting wet waste.

“We have collected e-waste for recycling and safe disposal and many residents voluntarily handed over the electronic waste. Also, we collected waste bags, footwear, clothes and utensils that are a major chunk of garbage from them,” the organisers said.

The civic body, along with the Citizen Consumer and Civic Action Group, has been doing a door-to-door collection of solid waste as a part of the Zero Waste Chennai campaign. Meanwhile, the civic body has already converted Manali as bin-free zone by implementing 100 per cent source segregation and door-to-door garbage collection.
