Vegetable prices go up by 10-20 per cent

Vendors said that flower prices have fallen after three days but are also expected to be increased for Vinayaka Chathurthi.

Koyambedu Wholesale Market, Secretary, P Sukumar said, “Last month, the price was lower due to rainfall. As the wedding season starts this month, the prices have increased. Tomato is sold for Rs 20-25, onion for Rs 30-40, beans for Rs 60 and carrot for Rs 50-55. Within a few days, there will be hike in the vegetable prices by 5 to 10 per cent and the prices won’t fall again throughout the month.”

Flower vendors at the market claimed that the prices have come down by half after three days. “Due to Sri Krishna Jayanthi, the flower prices were high. Now, jasmine is sold for Rs 300-360 per kg, jasminum sambac for Rs 120-150, rose for Rs 50-40 and crossandra Rs 500-600. The prices are likely to increase by the end of this month.”

According to Dhanush, Kai Kani Malar Podhu Nala Sangam, fruit prices are standard as usual, except Apple, which costs Rs 3,000 for one box (25-30kg). Fruit prices are also expected to rise for Vinayaka Chathurthi.
