The Director of DoTE, in his order, said, “The rainy season has just started. Piling up of garbage can retain water and it can lead to breeding of mosquitoes. All colleges are directed to clean their campus and remove any garbage that might cause water stagnation.”
The order, sent to principals of all government colleges, self-financing engineering colleges and polytechnic colleges, further said that necessary arrangements have to be made for continuous fogging of the campus to kill mosquitoes which can cause various health hazards, including Dengue.
The order directed the NSS Programme Officers, volunteers, faculty members and the local body office concerned to initiate necessary actions to eradicate the mosquito menace with adequate care and precautionary measures. “The action taken in this regard should be communicated with a detail report and photographs to DoTE,” the order said.
A senior official from DoTE told DT Next that a monitoring committee comprising senior officials from the Higher Education Department will be constituted to inspect all the colleges and would submit a report.
“If any institution does not follow the order, action will be taken against the management,” he said, adding that the order applies to all 585 engineering colleges and 520 polytechnic colleges across the State.
The official said that health camps will also be organised in colleges to identify health issues among students and faculty members.
“Colleges were also instructed to educate and create awareness among the students about the implication of mosquito breeding, especially during the rainy season,” he added.
