Based on a complaint by the superintendent, the Puzhal police have booked a case against the duo under Sections 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 294b (using obscene words), 506(1) (criminal intimidation). When contacted, inspector Thangadurai said that the action will be taken based on the directions of senior officers.

However, the jail sources said the duo could be moved toanother prison due to their violent behaviour.

“The incident happened on Tuesday morning when the SP went to inquire both Panna Ismail and Bilal Malik as they did not attend the grievances meeting held the previous day. An argument erupted between them and when the SP reportedly beat the two with the lathi, the duo allegedly retaliated and pushed the officer. This deteriorated the situation further,” sources said adding that the two had been observing hunger strike to show their protest since Tuesday afternoon. Both of them are key suspects in the 2011 case of planting of a pipe bomb on the yatra route of BJP leader LK Advani near Tirumangalam in Madurai district. They were arrested in 2013 and the police claimed that they were involved in a series of killings in the State. They had been lodged in high security block for convicts at the Central Prison, Puzhal.
