The police said that the deceased, Gokulnath of Kalyanapuram, was killed for revenge as he attacked another history-sheeter in the locality over a dispute in collecting of mamool in the neighbourhood just a few hours before he was killed.
While the police have detained four persons, they did not reveal whether the main suspect, Rasaiah (24) of Sundaram Street in Vyasarpadi, has been caught or not. The police said that the accused would be produced before the magistrate on Wednesday.
It all started on Monday evening when Gokulnath and his gang members barged into Rasaiah’s house and attacked him as he often interrupted Gokulnath’s men from collecting mamool from shops in Vyasarpadi. Rasaiah, who managed to escape from them with minor injuries, informed his gang about the incident.
It is said that Rasaiah and six of his men were hunting for Gokulnath since then and found him at Desikananthapuram around 10 pm. Onlookers said that they surrounded him and hacked him several times with machetes on his face, head and legs before fleeing the spot.
Shocked neighbours rushed him to Government Stanley Hospital, but Gokulnath succumbed to injuries in the midnight.
On information, the Vyasarpadi police registered a case and launched a hunt for the suspects. Four suspects were secured on Tuesday for interrogation.
The deceased, Gokulnath, got married recently and his wife is said to be pregnant. It may be noted that this is the second murder reported in Vyasarpadi in the last two weeks after one Jayakumar was hacked to death in August.
