Motorists and officegoers were the most affected as the road was blocked during the peak traffic hours. They were redirected in an alternative route to reach their destination.

Residents who noticed a deep three-feet wide hole in the middle of the road panicked and alerted traffic police. Aminjikarai law and order and traffic police personnel rushed to the spot and erected barricades around the pit.

The Greater Chennai Corporation officials were informed of the development and they inspected the spot. “There was a crack in the underground Metro Water line due to pressure and it led to the cave-in,” said a Corporation official.

Since the drainage water filled the half of the pit, it was removed with the help of borewells and earthmover was deployed to cover the pit with sand. Traffic in and around Anna Nagar was affected for about an hour due to the cave-in.
