Fake cops try to flee with minor on car drive, ‘accidentally’ stopped

Two history-sheeters, who posed as policemen and took a 16-year-old boy in his car to extort money, were arrested under robbery charges on Tuesday. The police on patrol managed to stop the car when it was involved in an accident in Villivakkam.

The Class 11 boy was rescued from them and the accused, Ebenezar (24) and Karthik alias Dinesh (20) of Tirumangalam, were remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday.

The police said that the incident happened on Monday night when the boy from Villivakkam took his father’s car out for a drive to meet his friends. He was talking to his friends near a private school on CTH Road when two men in plainclothes approached them.

The men allegedly claimed that they were policemen and ‘inquired’ the teenagers about who drove the car and asked boys to present their driving licences. While his friends escaped from the spot, the boy told them that it was his father’s car and admitted that he didn’t have a driving licence.

The duo then made him sit inside the car and drove it towards Anna Nagar. However, the car brushed against another vehicle near Tirumangalam and was stopped by police personnel on patrol.

All of them were taken to the Villivakkam police station after which the boy managed to inform his father about the incident. After investigation, the police said that the two were not policemen as they claimed, but history-sheeters with murder cases pending against them. “When the boy refused to give them money, they slapped him and took him in the vehicle to make him buy liquor for them,” said police.

A 36-year-old man, who claimed to be a policeman and created nuisance at the Marina beach in an inebriated state, was arrested on Tuesday.

The accused, Kamaraj from Kumbakonam, is working in an eatery in T Nagar, said the police. On Tuesday night, he got drunk and went to the beach. As it started raining, he took shelter under the umbrella of an ice cream cart, which led to an argument between him and the ice cream seller. Kamaraj allegedly claimed that he was a policeman and threatened the vendor.

The other people who gathered there nabbed Kamaraj and handed him over to the Marina police station. A case has been registered and further investigation is on. He was remanded in judicial custody on Wednesday.
