After peaking for a week, prices of flowers, veggies drop

After peaking ahead of Ganesha Chathurthi and muhurtham days, the prices of vegetables and flowers have fallen at Koyambedu wholesale market.

The secretary of Chennai Koyambedu Malar Podhu Vyabarigal Sangam, S Mookaiya, said, “For the last four days, flower prices were higher than usual owing to Ganesh Chathurthi. Now, the prices have fallen by 50 per cent as compared to the last five days.

Currently, jasmine is being sold for Rs 360-400/kg, jasminum sambac for Rs 240/kg, chrysanthemum Rs 100/kg, rose for Rs 70, damask rose Rs 70-80.”  He, however, added that prices are likely to increase again during Navarathiri and Ayudha pooja.”

Speaking about the decrease in price of vegetables, the secretary of Koyambedu Wholesale Market, P Sukumaran, said, “Barring a few vegetables, prices have fallen. 

Onion is being sold for Rs 30/kg, potato for Rs 20/kg, tomato Rs 20, beans Rs 40-60, broad beans Rs 20-35, carrot 25-35, radish Rs 10-15 and brinjal Rs 20-30. We are expecting a 10-15 per cent hike during the weekend. The fluctuation is likely to continue all month.”

According to Dhanasekar, the secretary of Kai Kani Malar Podhu Nala Sangam, fruit prices have remained stable except that of apple. Owing to a high demand, the price of apples have gone up to Rs 100/kg.
