According to a Chennai Corporation official, the new foot over bridge will connect Nungambakkam railway station and the other side of Nelson Manickam Road. “The FOB will be designed in a way that it passes over the Nungambakkam subway. Passengers alighting at the railway station can take the FOB without leaving the station,” he said.

On being asked about the need for a foot over bridge at the spot, the official explained that railway passengers have been struggling to cross the road during the peak hours and “this affects traffic flow.”

As the proposal is in the initial stages, the civic body is yet to design it and prepare a cost estimation for the project. It has, however, been confirmed that the foot over bridge will be constructed with funds from the Chennai Corporation and not from the Smart City funds. A meeting would be held to decide on the cost and design aspects of the foot over bridge, the official said.
Meanwhile, the civic body had already started invited tenders to construct a foot over bridge (skywalk) in T Nagar to connect Mambalam railway station and T Nagar bus terminus. The project is proposed under the Smart City Mission at a cost of around Rs 30 crore.

“As of now, we maintain five foot over bridges connecting railway stations and major roads in the city and the Nungambakkam foot over bridge will be our sixth,” the official said.
