The incident happened on Saturday evening, when one Murugan and his wife Hemalatha from Muthamizh Nagar in Kodungaiyur visited the beach. While they were sitting behind the Labour Statue, a woman in her 30s carrying a child approached the couple around 5 pm.
The woman requested Hemalatha to take care of the child, claiming that he had to use the public toilet. Hemalatha and her husband waited there with the girl, but the woman who left the spot did not return. The couple who grew suspicious searched for the woman but could not find her. They then handed over the child to the police station, said a police official.
Anna Square police station registered a case and sent the girl to a child care home in Chennai. Police sources said that it was difficult to identify the mother of the child, as there are no CCTV cameras on the beach side. They have collected footage from nearby areas to identity the missing woman.
