The roads are now filled with potholes, making it difficult for the public to travel.
“Some stretches were re-laid a few years ago, but it now paints a pathetic picture. Rain has worsened the situation. Even the cement concrete roads are damaged during the rains, revealing the poor quality of work that had gone into laying the roads. This has resulted in several accidents, especially during peak hours when the traffic is high. Work on the Metro Rail link has added to the congestion,” said Suresh K, a resident of Periyar Nagar.
“Driving through battered roads is a herculean task. There is water stagnation when it rains, due to which we don’t know where the potholes are. Safety is our concern. We have complained to the Corporation officials to take steps before the monsoon, but nothing has changed,” said Vijayanand L, a motorist.
Locals complain that the Corporation has not bothered to undertake patchwork to get rid of the potholes that act like speed-breakers. With monsoon approaching, officials should act fast, urged the residents here.
Speaking to DT Next, a Corporation official said, “As heavy vehicles ply through these roads, damage has set in early. We are waiting for the Metro Rail work to be completed. Once that is done, we will start re-laying themain roads.”
