This is the second such incident reported in a week in the locality after a woman died in Mannadi. The deceased, Alan, was a Class 2 student of a private school, while his father Sureshkumar works as a labourer in the Koyambedu market complex. The incident happened on Shanmugarayan Street around 3.30 pm when Sureshkumar went to take bath in the toilet adjacent to the house.
In the rain, the terracotta roof of the 100 sq ft house collapsed and fell on his wife Kalaivani, daughter Mercy Angel and son Alan. Hearing the noise, Sureshkumar rushed out and rescued Kalaivani who was stuck in the debris. “Later, Mercy Angel was also rescued as she started crying, but Alan was stuck deep under the debris and it was difficult to trace him in the dark,” said a neighbour. Alan was rescued with the help of neighbours and rushed to a private hospital where he was given first-aid. Late, he was transferred to Government Stanley Medical College Hospital, but doctors declared him brought dead. His body was sent for post-mortem examination. Kalaivani and Mercy Angel, a Class 6 girl, were admitted to the hospital. The girl had to undergo sutures for head injuries. The TV, cupboard and other objects in the house were damaged in the roof collapse.
Muthialpet police registered a case and conducted inquiries. Police said that it was a 60-year-old structure built on a church land. “Sureshkumar’s relatives live in the adjacent portions of the same structure,” said police. Further investigation is on. Exactly a week ago, 42-year-old Jerina Banu died after roof collapsed and fell on her at Mannadi.
