PWD inspects over 1,000 govt buildings in city

As part of the preparation for the monsoon, officials from the building wing of the PWD inspected more than 1,000 government buildings in the city to check their safety and stability.

“A circular was issued directing us to check electrical connections, water stagnation, roofs for leakage, and waste clogging the terrace of all government buildings maintained by PWD. The drains and sewage lines should be inspected periodically and issues, if any, should be rectified immediately,” said R Parimala, Assistant Executive Engineer, PWD (Building). Special focus was given to ensuring that arrangements for power backup was in place at the ICU and CCU units in government hospitals. They were instructed to keep generators on elevated places to ensure uninterrupted power during rain and inundation.


“We were also asked to inspect the water tanks to check whether they are cleaned and maintained to prevent waterborne diseases,” the official added. “After the inspection, in case of any issues with the building, we will inform the executive engineers. They will rectify these problems. So far, we have not identified any problems in the buildings,” said Parimala.


The department has also askedall the officials and engineers tostay vigilant and be available during the monsoon.
