Unable to take care of parents, US-returned man sets self ablaze

Dejected that he was not able to take care of his aged, ailing parents, a 49-year-old man, who returned from the US in July, set himself ablaze on the terrace of his parents’ apartment building in Anna Nagar in the wee hours of Monday.

The deceased was identified as Edward, son of RS Roy, who worked as a programme management advisor at FedEx in the US. A father of two children, Edward is said to be a divorcee. He had returned to Chennai on July 26 to take care of her mother who was diagnosed with cancer.

It was his neighbours who spotted the body of a man burning when they went to the terrace of the apartment at C Sector in Anna Nagar West around 7 am for morning walk. They immediately alerted Tirumangalam police station and a team of police personnel rushed to the spot. The body was removed and sent to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.

During investigation, police found that it was Edward. A can of petrol and a lighter were recovered from the spot. Preliminary investigation revealed that Edward was upset that he was not able to take care of his ailing parents and that he could not go back to the US to continue the job. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.
