Chennai to get moderate rain in next three days

For the capital city and districts reeling under intense heat in the last few days, the announcement from the Regional Meteorological Centre which predicted light to moderate rainfall has come as a relief.

The Centre said, Chennai city might witness light to moderate rainfall in next 48 hours and various parts of the state is likely to receive rainfall and thunderstorms in the next three days.


The Regional Meteorological Centre issued a heavy rainfall warning stating that heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Vellore, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruvannamalai, Namakkal, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Madurai, Dindigul, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar. The Centre also issued a thunderstorm warning stating that the thunderstorm with lightening is likely to occur at isolated places.


Even on Sunday, Erode received heavy rainfall of about 13 cm while Salem, Namakkal and Tirupur also recorded at least 6 cm of rainfall. Other districts, including Ramanathapuram, Coimbatore, Kanniyakumari and The Nilgiris also received a rainfall of about 3 cm.


However, the temperatures have increased by at least 3 degree Celsius in past one week. On Sunday, the weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded a maximum temperature of 33.8 degree Celsius and 33.6 degree Celsius respectively. The minimum temperatures recorded were 27.2 degree Celsius and 26.6 degree Celsius at Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam respectively.


The temperature is expected to rise further in Chennai city as maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 34 degree Celsius and 27 degree Celsius respectively. However, there can be respite from sweltering heat as the sky condition in the city is likely to be generally cloudy with light to moderate rain in some areas.


Weather blogger Pradeep John stated that coastal parts of the state are expected to receive rains in next five days due to Easterlies.
