Police said that they were on the lookout for the gang that robbed the jewels on Rajakulam – Enathur link road. The victim, Angeline Jessie (51) of Maligai Chetty Street in Kancheepuram, has a clinic in Sriperumbudur.
Around 9.30 pm on Sunday, Jessie was returning home in a car along with her driver. When they were nearing Kancheepuram through the link road, three men on a two-wheeler intercepted the car and asked the driver to open the door. The driver noticed that they carried sickles and knives, and refused to doso, said the police.
The group then broke the window using the weapons, opened the door and robbed gold ornaments weighing 24 sovereigns that the doctor was wearing. The group then left the spot after threatening to kill them if they complained to the police.
Though she informed the Kanchi taluk police about the incident, Jessie was initially hesitant to file a written complaint. After police assured her of protection, she lodged the complaint. The police have registered a case and are trying to identify the robbers with the help of the CCTV footage.
This is the second such incident in Kanchi taluk police limit. Last week, a three-member gang robbed cash from a petrol bunk after attacking the staff in the night hours.
Sources noted that the personnel at the stations in Kancheepuram were overloaded with security duty ever since the Athi Varadhar fest, which was followed by the visit of Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping to Mahabalipuram.
“For about three months, most of the police stations in the district were functioning with skeletal staff. Due to this, anti-social elements have become active,” sources added.
