Kittapan, an electrician from Kattupakkam, visited the Poonamallee police station on Monday morning and told the police that he murdered his wife Sumathi by slitting her throat at his house.
He was detained at the station while a team rushed to his house at Amman Nagar in Kattupakkam where they found Sumathi lying dead in a pool of blood. The police sent her body to the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
During interrogation, Kittapan said that he and Sumathi often quarrelled as he suspected her fidelity. She recently separated from him and was staying with herparents in the locality.
“On Monday morning, after dropping her two sons, aged five and three, in school, Sumathi went to her husband’s house to talk about reconciliation. However, a quarrel erupted between them and Kittapan hit Sumathi’s head with a hammer in a fit of rage. When she collapsed, he slit her throat with a knife and murdered her,” said police.
The weapons were seized from the house and Kittapan was remanded in judicial custody on Monday evening. “Though he slit Sumathi’s neck, it was the head injury from the hammer blow that caused her death,” said the investigation officer.
