Chennai

Barren Island, Andamans

Located in the East of the Andaman Islands chain, this island can be visited by chartered boats only with the permission of the forest department. It is also the sole active volcanic island in India. As the name suggests, it doesn’t have any accommodation but is a serene and secluded place which can prove to be every photographer’s paradise and backpacker’s delight.

Quibble Island, Tamil Nadu

It is one of the four river islands formed by the river Adyar and its tributaries. The island is situated between the neighbourhoods of Mylapore and Adyar. During the British rule, a European cemetery was located here. It also houses the grave of famous actor JP Chandrababu. This island neither has a hectic ambience nor the haste of city life.

Kavvayi, Kerala

It is a small island in Kavvayi Backwaters near Payyannur in Kannur district. You can either opt for a ferry from the mainland or cross through the Mavila Kadappuram Bridge to reach the island. This place has a charm of its own and has a vast history attached to it. Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta and Adbul Fida have mentioned Kavvayi in their travelogues.

Hope Island, Andhra Pradesh

The island is the result of a 200-year-old formation made out of sand drifting from a tributary of the Godavari River. The place only has a few government buildings and fisherman shacks for now but is undoubtedly a lovely sight to behold. To reach the island, one has to take a ride on the ferry from the Kakinada Fort.

Diu Island, Gujarat

This is a breathtakingly beautiful island lying off the south coast of Kathiawar peninsula in Gujarat. The beautiful island which lies on the south coast of the Kathiawar peninsula in the state of Gujarat is Diu. You can experience the fusion of the Portuguese culture and the Gujarati community here. The island has some of the most magnificent architectural structures that add on to the charm of pristine beaches.

St. Mary’s Island, Karnataka

Situated at a short distance from the Malpe coast of Udupi, Karnataka, St. Mary’s Island is a set of four small islands and is famous for the hexagonal shaped basaltic rock formations found here. The island also known as Coconut Island or Thonsepar has found its way to the list of 26 geological monuments in India. It is a must-visit place for those who adorn the explorer’s cap. You can take a ferry service from Malpe fishing harbour to reach St. Mary’s Island.

Divar Island, Goa

Situated at about 10 km upstream from Panjim, this island has great views, Portuguese-era mansions, pretty beaches and sleepy little roads winding their way across the island. One has to take a ferry ride from Ribandar to reach this place. This serene island is home to two ancient temples and a pretty white church perched on a hilltop. A few scenes from the movie Dil Chahta Hai were shot here.
