Cigarettes worth Rs 7 cr seized

Acting on intelligence input that an importer was attempting to smuggle cigarettes of foreign origin after declaring it as disposable biodegradable plates, a team from Chennai zone of the agency intercepted the container in Chennai Port. When they examined the container, the DRI officials found that cigarette cartons were concealed inside cartons of plates as cover cargo. In all, 50 lakh cigarettes were recovered and seized as per provisions of the Custom Act.
