Maoist refuses food in jail, terms it unhygienic

Maoist trainer Deepak refused to take food citing unhygienic conditions in the jail ward of the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Wednesday.

He is among the three extremists suspected to have fled away during a gun battle with Kerala police a week ago at Agali forest.


Following an alert from the Kerala police that Maoists could have escaped into the forest areas in Tamil Nadu after the encounter in Agali forest area, security has been beefed up along TN-Kerala border.


The Tamil Nadu Special Task Force (STF) police arrested Deepak near Aniakatty with severe injuries on his legs. He was then admitted to the jail ward of CMCH.


Even while undergoing treatment, Deepak refused to consume water given by the hospital complaining it to be unclean. As he asked for purified water, doctors gave him mineral water. Yet he refused to take food citing similar reasons.


On a fast since Tuesday, Deepak became weak and was administered with glucose.


The court had remanded him to judicial custody till November 22.
