City-based woman to participate in int’l wheelchair basketball tournament

A city-based sportsperson, Selvi A, will participate in an international women’s wheelchair basketball tournament to be held at Pattaya in Thailand.

Selvi will be participating in the 2019 Asia Oceania Championships and qualify for Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games along with other participants from various parts of the country between November 28 and December 8, 2019.


Selvi was introduced to ports when she was studying in Class 6. She was a sprinter and a shot-putter. She has been associated with the women’s wheelchair basketball team for the past six years. A resident of West Mambalam, Selvi is training at ICF indoor stadium for the international tournament.


“My parents have been very supportive of my interest in sports. My first international tournament was in Indonesia, where we played an invite match with the host country and won a bronze for the country. I wish to win a medal for the country in the Olympics and I am working for the same,” said Selvi.


Rajini Makkal Mandram’s south Chennai district secretary R Ravichandran and L Vijayakumar, deputy secretary of Traders Wing, jointly distributed financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to Selvi. State president of Tamil Nadu Udaivikkaram Association for the welfare of differently-abled, TAP Varadakutti, State general secretary Dr K Gopinath and others participated.
