They were identified as V Vignesh (22) of Krishnampet and his friend Mohammed Aarun (20) of Triplicane. Vignesh works as a delivery agent for an online food delivery service and Aarun is a final-year college student.
A team of police personnel, who were on night patrol on Tirumalai Pillai Road on Tuesday, intercepted the duo on suspicion and searched their belongings. One of them had a knife and it was seized.
During interrogation, the duo reportedly told the police that they had kept the knife for self-defence as they were threatened by a gang of men at knifepoint to part with the food they were carrying for delivery.
“When the duo refused, the four men allegedly attacked them. So, they claimed to be carrying the knife to protect themselves from miscreants,” the police said. The duo has been detained and further investigation is on to find out whether they had planned a revenge attack on the four-member gang who attacked them.
