Politics without borders: Fanboy pastes posters for Canadian PM across Chennai
At a time when even established politicians have to shell out from their pockets to get party workers to put out posters across the city, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has found an ardent fan in Chennai, who used his meagre savings to paste posters from Chennai Airport to Parry’s Corner thanking the citizens of Canada for electing a ‘great person as their leader’.

T Ramesh Kumar, who prefers to be merely identified as ‘Tamizhan’, said that he decided to print the posters and stick them after he came to know about the good deeds Trudeau did.
“He is one of the few world leaders who accepted refugees with open hands. Thousands of Tamils have found a home in Canada and are happy. I want to thank the people of Canada for electing such a good person,” Ramesh said.
A cab driver by profession, Ramesh printed 1,000 posters and stuck most of them at nights after completing the day’s work. “When I started pasting posters at the Airport area, I encountered resistance from local political workers, who abused me verbally for pasting posters of a foreign leader. They asked me to stick posters praising Thalaivar,” he recalled. “But I don’t intend to stop my work and will continue pasting them.”
The resident of Kasimedu said that he has been receiving dozens of calls every day from anonymous persons since the posters were out. “Sadly, ninety per cent of the calls I receive are threats from people who are upset over the posters for the Canadian leader. I have received very few calls appreciating my work.”
But that does not seem to have deterred the city cabbie at all. “I am planning to commence another poster campaign on global warming on Mount Road soon. In this initiative, some of my visually-challenged friends will also be joining me,” Ramesh said.
