200 shops pulled down on Shollinganallur highway

Several illegal shops on the Shollinganallur Highway in Tiruttani were demolished by highways department officials on Thursday. According to police, more than 200 shops had encroached into highways department land in K G Kandigai, Tiruttani area along the highway. All these shops were given eviction notices recently, highways officials said.

The drive was carried out as these illegal business outlets had narrowed the width of the highway leading to severe traffic congestion, especially during peak hours in the local bazaar.


“Locals also claimed that due to the encroachments along the highway in the bazaar area, many accidents, including several fatal ones, have taken place along the stretch. We had served notices to these shops a week ago asking them to vacate their premises,” a highways department official said.


On Thursday morning, the officials along with the local police, got earthmovers to the site and demolished the illegal structures. More than two hundred police were deployed at the site for security reasons.
