Injection for ‘cold’ turns fatal for girl

A 21-year-old girl died after taking an injection at a private hospital in Anagaputhur, on Wednesday.

The deceased, identified as Nithya from Tharapakkam village in Anagaputhur, was an English literature graduate and her father Siva Kumar is physically-challenged and is working for a private firm in MEPZ. The police said Nithya suffered from cold and vomited several times on Wednesday and she was taken to Jayam hospital in Anagaputhur by her mother Arputhamary. Dr Sujatha Karnagaran, who checked Nithya, administered an injection and within a few minutes, she began to sweat and fell unconscious.


Soon, she was rushed to another private hospital in the area. The doctors who checked Nithya said that her condition was critical and referred her to the Chrompet Government hospital where she was declared brought dead.


Following the incident, relatives and friends gathered in front of Jayam hospital and began to argue with the staff there. Arputhamary filed a complaint with the Shankar Nagar police station. The police visited the spot and took the body for post-mortem examination to Chrompet Government Hospital.


On Thursday morning, relatives who went to the police station wanted the post-mortem to be recorded by other doctors and the police accepted their request and sent the body to Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital. The police said that the reason for her death will be known only after they get the post-mortem report.
