Drunk man blabbers about treasure, kidnapped, killed

Police arrested a 10-member gang, including the son of a sub-inspector, near Tambaram for allegedly kidnapping and murdering a 50-year-old man to usurp a “treasure” that he found.

The victim came to the gang’s attention after flashing Rs 2,000 notes while drinking at a Tasmac bar on Sunday night.


The deceased was identified as Murugan, said to be a construction supervisor from Tambaram. Police arrested Arun Pandian (30), Muniyandi (32), Sekar (30), Purushothaman (33), Bharathi (33), Kandan (30), Kumar (33), Ezhilkumar (32), Vignesh (33) and Janakiraman (32) from Tambaram.Arun is the son of an SI, Kanniappan, who is posted in Shankar Nagar police station.


On Sunday night, as they were drinking at a Tasmac bar in Tambaram, the gang noticed Murugan handing over Rs 2,000 notes to a few who were present at the bar.


He reportedly claimed he had a lot of money. The gang members, allegedly claiming to be police personnel, summoned Murugan and started questioning him how he got this much money. Murugan reportedly told them that he found a treasure, from which he sold some of the jewels.


The gang kidnapped Murugan on a car and took him to a house in Kovilambakkam, where they began to question him as to where the money and jewels were kept. Sources said that the gang also kidnapped his wife Amudha (44) and son Krishnan (25) thinking that they might know about the treasure.


After Murugan said he had kept the treasure in his native in Vellore, the gang took him there in their car. When they could not find the treasure as Murugan claimed, they attacked him that led to his death. They left the body and his family on the road, and escaped from the spot.


Murugan’s son Krishnan filed a complaint with the Vallaipandal police station in Vellore. Based on the information given by the Vellore police, the Tambaram police formed a special team and nabbed the gang in Tambaram on Thursday.


On Thursday night, the Vellore police team who came to Tambaram arrested all of them and took them into custody. Police said the case would be transferred to Tambaram police.
